Alvimedica Has Develped the Best Drug Eluting Stent in the World

Drug Eluting StentAlvimedica's drug-eluting stent has been proven to be the most effective worldwide by the latest clinical studies. The stent -which is scheduled to be introduced to the market soon- is considered to be the best drug-eluting stent in the world by two highly regarded and globally renowned professors. Animal studies of the drug-eluting stent called Coracto were carried out by one of the most respected scholars in the world, Prof. Renu Virmani. Clinical studies were also conducted on patients overseen by another highly acclaimed scholar: Cardiologist, Prof. Nicolaus Reifart.

Prof. Reifart stated: “Deaths occurring frequently due to late thrombosis, which is a disease that blocks the coronary arteries and eventually causes death in patients who have drug eluting stents implanted, have not been observed during Coracto stent’s clinical studies - even in high risk patients with calcified plaques in their coronary arteries. Alvimedica, a leading medical technology company and the first and only manufacturer of coronary stents, guiding catheters and PTCA balloon catheters in Turkey, is preparing itself for its upcoming achievements. Prof. Renu Virmani gave a speech and talked about her studies and about the success of the stent (To watch Prof. Dr. Virmani's presentation please click here) at the 17th National Interventional Cardiology Meeting / 2nd Anatolian Invasive Cardiology Workshop and Post ACC / Arrhythmia 2010 held at the WOW Convention Center in Istanbul, Turkey on April, 22nd-25th, 2010.

During the live cases broadcasted at the 17th National Interventional Cardiology Meeting, Prof. George Sianos from Greece AHEPA University and a member of Euro CTO Club, and Prof. Alfredo R. Galassi from Italian Ferrarotto Catalania University also a member of Euro CTO Club, performed implantations on CTO patients using Coracto stents.

Prof. Dr. Renu VirmaniProf. Galassi successfully implanted two Coracto stents on to the total occlusion in RCA and to a lesion in LAD using Szabo Technique. After the operation Prof. Galassi indicated that, he was really impressed by the performance of Coracto. Prof. Sianos also implanted two stents, one to the prior to trifurcation in the left main coronary artery and the other on to the second diagonal branch. He expressed that not only the performance of Coracto stent but also the results of Prof. Renu Virmani's study impressed himself a lot.

After 14 months of clinical studies conducted on patients with chronic total occlusion by Prof. Nicolaus Reifart and his team, Coracto (Rapamycin-eluting stent) showed very successful results. Stent's design, its 100% bio-absorbable polymer coating, its drug release kinetics, and the antiproliferative effects of the drug loaded on it, led to very satisfactory results even in the most difficult lesions.

Because of all these features, deaths occurring frequently due to the late thrombosis -which is a disease that blocks the coronary arteries and eventually causes death in patients who have drug eluting stents implanted- have not been observed during Coracto stent’s clinical studies even in high risk patients with calcified plaques in their coronary arteries. Therefore patients who have Coracto stents implanted receive the dual anti-platelet therapy much shorter compared to the regular drug eluting stent implanted patients. The factor of completely bio-absorbable polymer plays an important role in implantation’s success.

Coracto stent’s animal studies performed by Prof. Renu Virmani and her colleagues The first results of her study was presented at the ACC meeting (American Colleague of Cardiologist) held in Atlanta in March, 2010 In her speech Prof. Virmani indicated that, her team performed a comparative animal study on two commonly used drug-eluting stents and Coracto showed better results over the other ones. In this study following the stents’ implantation endothelialization rates were measured. Coracto stent was compared with two other golden standard drug-eluting stents along with a bare metal stent. As can be seen in Figure 1, compared to the bare metal stent, all of the drug-eluting stents showed slower percent’s of endothelialization as expected. However, Coracto stent showed higher percent’s of endothelialization compared to the other two drug eluting stents.

Stent Struts

The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) results showed us that Coracto stent has better results compared to other two competing drug-eluting stents -which are widely known and frequently used by the cardiologists (EES: Everolimus-eluting stent, SES: Sirolimus eluting stent). In the same study, inflammation scores of the stents have also been investigated. It has been determined that SES (Sirolimus-eluting stent) showed a much larger inflammation score compared to Coracto stent. Inflammation score of Coracto was also slightly less than other stent which was an EES (Everolimus-eluting stent).  The results of the study have proven that Coracto is a reliable and effective drug-eluting stent.

Inflammation Score

During the EuroPCR meeting held in Barcelona, Spain in May, 2009, -which is one of the most important events in the invasive cardiology field-, Prof. Renu Virmani had stressed that, Coracto is one of the most promising stents of the future.
