Great Contributions to Cardiology training from Alvimedica

The very first cardiology simulation training center in Turkey (IKSEM) is inaugurated at Istanbul Mehmet Akif Ersoy Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital. The center was built with the contributions of Alvimedica -the first and only stent manufacturer in Turkey-, and Turkish Society of Cardiology (TDK). CEO of Alvimedica, Dr. Cem F. Bozkurt, Head Physician at Istanbul Mehmet Akif Ersoy Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital Ass. Dr. Ihsan Bakir, General Secretary of TDK and Dokuz Eylul University School of Medicine Cardiology Department Professor Omer Kozan attended the opening ceremony.
At IKSEM, instead of practicing on real patients, newly trained doctors have the opportunity to practice angiography, balloon and stent applications on models and simulation devices which create the conditions of a real case. Training courses -with the contributions of Alvimedica- will be held on a monthly basis by TDK.
Head Physician of Istanbul Mehmet Akif Ersoy Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital Ass. Dr. Ihsan Bakir said, ´This training center, as the first one of its kind in Turkey, will function at our hospital and is an important step for our country and the science of cardiology. Prior to this center, our doctors were going abroad to take training, but now it is possible for doctors from abroad to training here. Training at our center will be in compliance with international standards; and for that reason, our hospital with its medical specialists will be a candidate for becoming a ´Center of excellence’.
Regarding the first simulation training center opened in Turkey, CEO of Alvimedica, Cem Bozkurt said, “As the Alvimedica family, we think contributing to the training held by TDK is our duty and our goal. We will continue supporting theTurkish Society of Cardiology in this initiative”.
The General Secretary of TDK and Dokuz Eylul University Medical School Cardiology Department Professor Omer Kozan said, “For the Turkish Cardiology Institute, it is very important to support our practitioners’ training after they have graduated from medical school. In this center, many newly graduated practitioners will get a chance to practice their first angiography, balloon and stent applications and improve their skills. Lead by the Turkish Society of Cardiology, this project will contribute to the training of practitioners from all over Turkey. As a result, this project will help us country-wide to create new protocols for acute coronary syndrome treatment.
Eskisehir Osmangazi University School of Medicine Cardiology Department Professor Omer Goktekin, project coordinator of Istanbul Cardiology Simulation Training Center, said, “We have been working on this project for almost a year now. We are happy to announce that the first meeting will be held in January 2010. Especially having a chance to work on simulators with totally occluded arteries and bifurcations simulations -where it is difficult to implant stents- will significantly increase the success levels of cardiologists.
